MR imaging in non-tumorous myelopathy

Abstract
Abnormal MR findings of the spinal cord seen in 12 patients with non-tumorous myelo,.athy (6 multiple sclerosis (MS) , 2 postinfectious myelitis and 4 unclassified myelopathy) w; re retrospectively analyzed. The diagnosis -was based upon the clinical, electrophysiological, ne - roradiological, CSF findings and the course of the disease on follow-up study. MR imagi g was performed on a 2.0 T superconducting unit using multi-slice and multi-echo techniques.
In MS, MR showed diffuse (4 cases) or multifocal (2 cases) segmental high signal inters. - ities within the central portion of the cord on T2-weighted images in all 6 patients, - d mild spinal cord enlargement in 1 patient. In 2 patients with postinfectious transverse myelit s, MR showed similar multifocal segmental high signal intensities within the central portion ff the cord on T2-weighted images, and mild cord enlargement in 1 patient. In 4 patients wi unclassified myelopathy, MR appeared similar to MS and myelitis.
The lesions were iso-intense or slightly hypointense on TI-weighted images. Although the MR findings described above are not specific in non-tumorous myelopath,. MR imaging appears to be useful in the evaluation of the extent and the level of the myelopathy.
